I filed for bankruptcy in 1997 - I have since married and my husband has excellent credit. Now he would like to purchase a home - he is the breadwinner - I do not work. How can we get a mortgage without having to disclose my poor credit rating?

Fortunately, your husband can probably apply for a mortgage on his own without your credit history coming into question. Married couples apply for mortgages together when both spouses are employed, simply because their combined income is higher than their individual incomes. When spouses apply for credit together, they are promising to use both incomes and equally be responsible for repaying the loan.

Since you will probably not be claiming that any of your income will be used towards the payments, the lender will not need to check your credit. If your husband applies for the loan and puts it in his name, the mortgage lender will evaluate his credit worthiness on the basis of his income and credit history. Whether or not he qualifies will not be based on your credit history. However, if this happens, the payments will be made by him and will not go towards improving your credit rating. Even if he gets the loan, you may want to apply for some smaller cards and start paying regular timely payments so that you, too, can obtain the benefits of a good credit history.
